Hindu scriptures stress immense importance on horoscope or Kundli matching, especially at the time of marriage. Our elders believe in the traditional way of finding matches. Hence, the prospective bride and groom's birth horoscopes or Kundli are compared to check the compatibility. This process is called Horoscope Matching or Matchmaking. In Indian societies, Kundli Milan remains an important factor before finalizing a marriage. The higher the compatibility, the higher the chances for the couple to have a happy married life.
Marriage is the union of two souls and is considered sacred among Hindus. Everyone wants to find that perfect partner to spend their life with. In our society, arranged marriage is still important. Hence, a comparison of the boy and girl's horoscope chart is crucial before proceeding with the match. A number of 36 gunas or 8 kutas are taken into account to generate the horoscope compatibility. The 8 Kuta horoscope matching system is used by most astrologers to compare the horoscope chart of the boy and the girl. The perfect match is when all the 36 gunas of the prospective bride and groom match.

Why is Kundli Matching Important?

People rely on Vedic Astrology for unlocking their future. For ages, Hindu scriptures have relied on Vedic Astrology for horoscope matching as well. Vedic Astrologers are sought after to generate the reading of the prospective couple. It is done to check if there is negativity lying in the path of the bride and the groom that can create disaster in their lives after marriage.
In case any dosha or flaw is found, remedies are suggested by the expert astrologers to eliminate the adverse effects. Horoscope matching, Guna Milan or Lagna Melapak considers factors including the financial position that can be acquired in the society, the longevity of both the partners, Manglik Dosha, emotional stability, and compatibility between the two individuals. Kundli matching of both the man and the woman or aspired spouses is extremely useful as it informs about the influence of stars on their marital life. Both the individuals can know about their career, compatibility to give birth to off-springs, and any special puja needed for life's betterment.

Factors considered in Kundli Matching?

The concept of Guna Milan is an important aspect of Vedic Astrology. A number of factors are assessed while matching the janampatri of both the prospective bride and groom. The moon's placement in the prospective bride and groom's horoscope is the most crucial factor in Kundli matching.
It is believed that at least 50% of the gunas should match for the prospective couple. Only then, the match will be a successful one. This comparison is called Ashthakoot Milaan. Reference can be seen in the below table.

Ashtakoot (8 Kootas or Kutas) Milan is a process of Guna Milan, which signifies the eight aspects of Gunas. These eight Kootas taken into account are:
Varna/Varan/Jaati: The castes of Moon Rashis are compared. The division has 4 categories, namely Brahmins (Highest), Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra (Lowest). The spiritual match between the prospective couple is represented along with their ego levels.
Vasya/Vashya: Vashya represents the mutual attraction between the couple. It also denotes the balance of power dynamics after marriage and control in marriage. It is based on Moon sign compatibility and not on Nakshatras. A person is classified into five categories - Manav (human), Vanchar (wild animals), Keeta/Keet (insects), Jalchar (sea animals) and Chatushpad (animals such as deer).
Tara/Dina: This signifies if one's marriage turns out to be beneficial to your health and overall well-being. It can also denote longevity and good fortune.
Yoni: Yoni stands for physical and sexual compatibility along with attraction and love between the married couple. The physical or intimate tendencies of a person are compared to that of an animal. There are 14 animals, which are Horse, Elephant, Sheep, Snake, Dog, Cat, Rat, Cow, Buffalo, Tiger, Hare/Deer, Monkey, Lion, Mongoose. Some animals will have a higher natural affinity, while some remain neutral. The score can also change when animals imitate another animal.
Graha Maitri/Rasyadipati: It stands for progeny, harmony, and affection. The emotional and mental compatibility is assessed through Graha Maitri. It shows the difference in outlook towards life between the couple.
Gana: This is used to compare the temperament of the couple by comparing the Nakshatras alignment. Birth stars (Nakshatras) are divided into three categories- Deva (God, indicating Satwa Guna), Manava (Human, indicating Rajo Guna) and Rakshasa (Demon, indicating Tamo Guna).
Rashi or Bhakoot: It represents the strength of the emotional bond between couples. It shows the prosperous life a couple will have after marriage.
Nadi: It denotes the compatibility of the health of partners. The comparison is drawn between body doshas of each person. Stars or Nakshatras are broken into three parts- Aadi (Vata) Nadi, Madhya (Pitta) Nadi and Antya (Kapha) Nadi. It also assesses the genetic compatibility between the couple.
